About Dr. Julie A. Greenawalt
Leadership. Experiences. Values!
I’m Dr. Julie Greenawalt, and like you I love Texas and our nation! I grew up in a middle-class neighborhood, with good schools, a safe community and where everyone had a vibrant sense of citizenship. I want that for our younger generation. We have to ensure that prosperity continues and they need to be able to problem-solve and think critically to preserve this wonderful way of life. Our schools, parents and community should all be able to deliver that to them. To accomplish this we need to work together.
Denton ISD is a rapidly growing district, which serves a vast array of students. Currently, it serves over 32,000 students. It has a robust curriculum. It has a wealth of quality programs, but not all programs are available to all students. As a previous educator, a now retired full professor from a public university in Pennsylvania we were tasked to deliver curriculum to all of our students. Was it challenging? Yes, but with creative ways we were able to deliver. I hope to bring that imagination and creative problem-solving to the table here at Denton ISD. It is wise to anticipate and expect growing pains. That is the sign of a dynamic and growing community.
I learned a lot in college and in life. I received my undergraduate degree from Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois in 1981. I continued with my learning and obtained two master’s degrees: one in Computer Resource Management from Webster University while I was on active duty with the Air Force, stationed at Dover AFB, DE. Later. I obtained a second master’s at Duquesne University, a Catholic University in Pittsburgh, PA. At that same time, I also obtained my School Nurse Certification which allowed me to work at our local public school as a School Nurse. Then, in 2008 I completed my dissertation and obtained my Doctorate in Philosophy where I taught for over 20 years at a large public university in Pennsylvania to nursing students. I taught maternity nursing, ethics and disaster preparedness at all levels. I was very active with my professional organizations and am well published in the literature.
Prior to teaching, I met my husband while both of us were serving in the United States Air Force. He as a pilot, myself as a nurse for over 10 years. I served in Desert Storm/Persian Gulf War as a flight nurse and have many commendations and awards from that time.
My recent retirement from academia has brought me to Texas where I am busy volunteering and helping in the community. I have recently enlisted with the Medical Reserve Corps. I am also engaged with the Conservative Women of Action where I serve as the facilitator of a group of civic-minded women. I have been married to my husband Scott for over 40 years, and together we have raised 3 children to adulthood. Scott, also retired is now teaching full-time at Tarrant College. In my free time, I enjoy bocce, swimming, quilting, and friends.
As a recent retiree I have the time, energy and passion to assist in making this a great place to live, learn and work. These are challenging times we are asked to navigate, but growth often comes with turbulence, change and upheaval. Together, with strong leadership and oversight we can bring parents, teachers, and businesses together to create a healthy, vibrant, energetic community that supports education. I have always been a strong believer in education and am committed to the success of both sides of the team the educators and the students! I have a wealth of knowledge, experience and passion to invest in support of Denton ISD as it grows in size towards excellence!
In the coming months, I look forward to meeting with many of you and hope
I can earn your vote.
Together we can take Denton ISD, BEYOND EXPECTATIONS!

A wonderful place
Denton ISD is a wonderful place for our kids to grow and learn, but I believe we can do even better. By running for Trustee, I want to amplify community voices at the district level, streamline our budget so that taxpayer dollars go exactly where they’re needed most, and foster a culture of academic excellence that prepares every student for success after graduation—whether that means college, technical training, or entering the workforce.
Where we need to go
